United Kingdom: Malting barley export surplus could reach 500 thousand tonnes this year

UK’s winter barley acreage is reported at 450 thousand ha, spring barley at 650 thousand, thus total at 1.1 mln ha this year, H. M. Gauger GmbH said earlier this month.

Spring barley yields as per MARS are 6.24 tonnes/ha, however, 6.5 tonnes/ha as per trade/industry sources. Spring barley crop is forecast at 3.9 mln tonnes, of which 2.7 mln tonnes selectable for malting. The UK’s export surplus could reach 400-500,000 tonnes of 2rs malting barley, but logistics will limit shipments to the continent, the analysts said.

Apart from some dry areas in the south, England harvested a large and good quality crop, with correct specs including 9.5 – 11.5% protein, correct screenings and low moisture.

The Scottish harvest is coming close to its end, two weeks ahead of normal years; harvested spring barley is of good quality; protein contents are +/- 9.0%, perfect for distilling malt.
